November 9th, 2011 – SEC Seminar and Dinner Meeting

IBC & IEBC Codes - Structural Provisions for Existing Buildings

The presentation will cover the significant changes to Chapter 34 of the 2009 and 2012 International Building Code. These include: thorough editing and reorganization, coordination with the International Existing Building Code, revised upgrade provisions for building alterations, and new upgrade provisions for structural repairs. Revisions now being planned for the 2015 editions will be discussed as well. Special topics, including the relationship of the codes to local mitigation policies, historic buildings, and national standards, as well as example applications, will be addressed in response to audience interest. The State of Connecticut is now considering adoption of the 2012 IBC and IEBC.  This seminar will provide the attendees with a thorough understanding of the upcoming changes to IBC Chapter 34.

Speaker: David Bonowitz is a California S.E. with experience consulting to city, state, and federal agencies on the use of engineering codes and standards for pre- and post-earthquake risk reduction. He chairs the Existing Buildings committee of the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations, which develops and coordinates code changes on behalf of the nationwide engineering community. He is past-chair of the SEAONC Existing Buildings and Seismology Committees and is a current member of the ASCE 31-41 standards committee on seismic evaluation and rehabilitation.

Bonowitz was the 2004 recipient of SEAONC’s Edwin Zacher Award for Outstanding Service to the Structural Engineering Profession and the 2005 recipient of EERI Northern California’s Award for Innovation and Exemplary Practice in Earthquake Risk Reduction. In 2007 he was made a Fellow Member of SEAONC, and in 2011 he was named a Fellow Member of the state organization, SEAOC. He is a graduate of Princeton University and holds a Master’s Degree in Structural Engineering from U.C. Berkeley.
